About Transactional Analysis and what to expect from the first session

What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychoanalytical approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy thats main focus is to help people understand themselves and others through analysing personality, communication and relationships.

Its creator, Eric Berne, hoped that by simplifying often complex theories, more people would be able to achieve personal growth and change.

The first session

If you have never worked with a Counsellor or Psychotherpist before, it can feel like an extremely daunting undertaking. This is totally normal, and working out what you want from therapy can be our first piece of work, if necessary.

After a brief telephone consultation to determine whether we both agree to work together, the first session will consist of several key elements.

This will include you beginning to tell your story at whatever pace is comfortable for you. It will also be an opportunity for me to ask a number of questions to begin forming an understanding of you as a person.

Following this, we can then begin to discuss and form a therapeutic contract about what it is that you would like from your therapy and how best to achieve that.
